AoS-less Tuesday Discussion: If You Could be Inhuman...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. entered its winter hiatus this week following the winter finale, “Maveth” (3x10).  There are going to be five total weeks without any new Marvel TV—Agent Carter will begin on January 19 and run through March 1, with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returning on March 8—so I am going to post a new discussion thread every week with a different concept for us to explore and debate.

First up:  If you could be an Inhuman, what power (or powers) would you want to have?

However, that question is a little too open-ended, so let’s add some parameters.  Specifically, keep in mind that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has thus far made it clear that the more exotic and powerful an Inhuman’s ability is, the greater the tradeoff.  Here are some examples:

  • Raina:  has the ability to dream of the future (clairvoyance); the tradeoff is that she looks like Sonic the Hedgehog’s long-lost cousin
  • Gordon:  has the ability to teleport across great distances and sense Kree energies from people and artifacts; the tradeoff is that he lost his eyes
  • Andrew/Lash:  has the ability to emit massive energy blasts, along with an incredible degree of durability; the tradeoff is that “Lash” is slowly taking over his body, leaving less and less of “Andrew”
  • Jiaying:  has the ability of a greatly prolonged lifespan; the tradeoff is that her continued life comes at the price of draining someone else’s life force

So what abilities would you want to have, keeping in mind that the greater the abilities, the greater the tradeoff?

In thinking through this question for myself, my first thought was flight and super-strength or something like that, but I think the tradeoff for those abilities would be too great.  From what I understand of the Inhumans, Black Bolt’s ability to fly by manipulating the energy around him is far more unusual than just receiving wings, and having wings would be kind of hard to hide!  Among other things, in my line of work having a pair of wings (or wings instead of arms) would be a bit of a detriment.

Instead, I think I would prefer pyrokinesis, but not quite as powerful as, say, the Human Torch or Dante (one of the NuHumans who actually transforms between his human form and a form very similar to the traditional depiction of the devil!).  I think on a scale of powers pyrokinesis would be considered less powerful than Lincoln’s electricity, but more than Joey’s melting.

Of course, that’s a fairly vanilla option; there are much more interesting options out there to choose from!

So what about you?  Would you want to play it safe with something relatively weak, or would you take the tradeoff of a more powerful ability and a physical change?  Put your answer below in the comments!
