Agent Carter Season 2, Episode 1, "The Lady in the Lake," and Episode 2, "A View in the Dark" EXPECTATIONS

Agent Carter returns tonight with “The Lady in the Lake” (2x01) at 9:00 PM Eastern/Pacific, followed by “A View in the Dark” (2x02) at 10:00 PM Eastern/Pacific.  What do we expect from tonight's episodes?

What happened last season?
Peggy struggled to settle into a peacetime role in the Strategic Scientific Reserve after serving with distinction alongside Captain America and the Howling Commandos in World War II.  In contrast to the purpose and meaning she found during the war, Peggy is faced with men who treat her like a second-class citizen because of her gender.

This all changes when Howard Stark returns to her life and asks her to help clear his name of a charge of treason for selling weapons to enemies of America.  He assigns his butler, Edwin Jarvis, to assist her in the investigation.  Over the course of the investigation Peggy finds herself uncovering and stopping a plot by the Soviet splinter intelligence agency Leviathan, which seeks to use one of Howard’s stolen inventions, “Midnight Oil,” to turn the city of New York against itself and frame Howard for the crime.  She must combat the mind control abilities of Dr. Johann Fennhoff (known in the comics as “Dr. Faustus”) as well as the abilities of elite Soviet agent Dottie Underwood, who is herself a proto-Black Widow.  In the end Peggy foils their plot while simultaneously coming to terms with the tragic loss of the love of her life, Steve Rogers.

Episode Synopsis for “The Lady in the Lake”:
“Peggy moves to the City of Angels to help Chief Daniel Sousa at the West Coast Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) investigate a bizarre homicide involving an alleged killer and Isodyne Energy, and reunites with some familiar faces.”

Episode Synopsis for “A View in the Dark”:
“Peggy discovers her murder investigation has huge ramifications that can destroy her career, as well as everyone near and dear to her.”

Continuing plot points:

  • Dottie the proto-Black Widow loose in America
  • Whitney Frost as a different kind of foil for Peggy
  • Corruption in Hollywood
  • Darkforce—a potential minor tie-in with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Doctor Strange

What I am looking for tonight:
  • They will let us know pretty quickly just how much time passed between seasons, as well as if the Agent Carter One-Shot has already happened
  • I expect a decent explanation for why Thompson is sending Peggy across the country to help Sousa with this investigation
  • A lot of Peggy and Jarvis (and perhaps some of Mrs. Jarvis thrown in for good measure)
  • I expect that we will meet Whitney Frost pretty early in the season as compared with the introduction of Dottie and Fennhoff last season

What would be awesome but probably won’t happen:
I think I’m just going to put this one in here every episode until it actually does happen:  The Howling Commandos!

So what are you looking for in tonight’s episode?  What is there that you really want to see but may not see at all?

As a warning, I am at a retreat through Wednesday, so I will not be able to watch these episodes tonight—in fact I may not be able to watch them before Thursday!  So don’t be surprised when I don’t publish my review before Thursday or Friday.  Also, I will probably just write a single review to cover both episodes.

If you want to get an email whenever I publish a new article, go to the top of the page and enter your email address in the box labeled “Subscribe to Mostly MCU Reviews” and click “Submit.”
