Weekly MCU Review for April 22

Another week, and more MCU news!  There’s all kinds of news about movies wrapping production and scheduling the start of their production, plus a whole bunch of TV news.  Put some ketchup on your eggs, and catch-up on your Marvel news!

My articles from the week

So things didn’t exactly go as planned this week, at least not in terms of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  I did review last week’s episode, but my VCR for some reason didn’t record this week’s episode.  So now the plan is to watch it online today or tomorrow, and then have that review posted Monday or Tuesday.  I’ll probably push my Iron Fist article off to later in the week to balance things out.

In other news, here are my thoughts on the villains from Iron Fist.  Definitely the weakest element of the series.

Check back later today for an article about the New Warriors!

Doctor Strange was so well received that Scott Derrickson is reportedly in line to direct the (unannounced but expected) sequel.

So Sylvester Stallone is playing Starhawk in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Following up on Stallone’s role, Kevin Feige and James Gunn revealed that the original Guardians are going to be in the movie, also… sort of.

Though he was cut from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Adam Warlock is going to play an important role in Phase 4.  Can you say “Infinity Watch”?

Black Panther wrapped filming, but I don’t expect a trailer any time soon.

Ant-Man and the Wasp starts filming in June.  It’s getting hard to keep all the in-production movies straight!

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will direct Captain Marvel, which is scheduled to begin filming next February.

Here is the first trailer for Cloak & Dagger!  What do you think of it?

Also, we now know who’s going to be in the New Warriors:

  • Squirrel Girl- squirrel powers
  • Mister Immortal- immortal (but heals at a regular rate)
  • Night Thrasher- celebrity “hero” with his own YouTube channel
  • Speedball- throws balls of telekinetic energy
  • Microbe- talks to germs
  • Debrii- telekinetic

At least so far it certainly looks like it will be an interesting series.  My guess is that they will be adapting the series from the 2000s when the New Warriors tried to have their own reality TV show, though it can’t end quite the way that series did (big boom, dead kids, Civil War), since the Superhero Civil War already happened.  However, I am concerned about the description of Debrii as “confidently out as a lesbian,” not necessarily because she’s lesbian but because I am really not a fan of soapy drama.  I’m sure putting these shows on Freeform means there will be all kinds of soapy teen drama, but can they dial it down a bit?

Rosario Dawson talked to Collider a little about her role in the Marvel Netflix series.  Among other things, the reason she never actually called Matt during Iron Fist was that he was busy filming The Defenders (makes sense from a scheduling perspective, but not so much plot).  Also, she will not appear in The Punisher.

News from Around Geekdom

Anything not related to the MCU that I find interesting

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing Black Manta for Aquaman.  I wonder if his son, Aqualad, will be in the movie also.

More good stuff coming from Star Wars Celebration:  a trailer for Star Wars Rebels!  I’m sad that it is confirmed as the final season, but at least they get to end it on their own terms.
