What's the Last Story Arc in AoS Season 4 Going to Be?

www.facebook.com/AgentsofShield

By now it’s pretty well known that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: LMD arc is going to conclude next week with the episode “Self Control.”  This is the fifteenth episode of the season, leaving seven more episodes for the third and final arc of the season.  However, as of late we do not have any definitive information about that final arc beyond a comment from Chloe Bennet that it will give something of a payoff for fans who have been watching since season 1.  I really don’t know what that means, but we’re going to speculate, anyways!

What could the final arc of this season be?  Here are at least a few possibilities.

Potential New Spinoffs for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Part 1

Unfortunately, back in April word broke that ABC had decided to pass on the Marvel’s Most Wanted spinoff of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  This was extremely disappointing news since this show looked like a really good and interesting change of pace from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which would expand on two really good characters.  At the time the powers that be didn’t explain their reasoning for passing on the spinoff (they have since stated that it “wasn’t as strong” as other ideas), but a rumor did surface shortly thereafter that this was part of a major shakeup at ABC.  The old executive was trying to market shows with the “Marvel” logo which did not connect directly with the movie universe—essentially using “Marvel” to boost ratings.  The new executive did not want to do that and instead wanted to focus on Marvel shows that would expand on and connect directly to the Marvel movies.

Personally, while the idea of just using the “Marvel” logo to boost ratings is problematic, I also think it’s a stupid idea to focus on just connecting to the movies (if it’s true).  In my opinion, what’s interesting about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (excepting the Winter Soldier tie-in, which belongs in its own category) isn’t the 2-5 episodes each season which directly connect to movies.  What’s interesting about the show is the interesting characters and the plots which expand the movie universe in ways that the movies would not be able to (due to time, scope, and the like).  Agent Carter was interesting specifically because it could expand on things like the origin of S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra infiltration, and initial experimentation with Darkforce, things which help to give the movie universe depth.  Marvel’s Most Wanted would have been interesting because it could expand on the “seedy underbelly” of the MCU in ways that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the movies really can’t.  Just because a show doesn’t directly tie into the movies doesn’t make it bad; just look at Netflix and The Defenders shows.

However, that being said, it seems that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is in need of a new spinoff to set up this year.  For the sake of argument, I will introduce these spinoff ideas under the assumption that they need room to make direct connections to the movies.  Considering the number of ideas involved, I decided to break them up into 2 groups.  This week’s ideas are the “easy ones” (meaning that they use characters/concepts already on the show).  Next week’s ideas will use new characters and themes.

Potential New Magic Users in the MCU

DrStrange
With Doctor Strange ushering a New Magical Age into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, suddenly a whole world of new possibilities opens up for our favorite movies and TV shows.  Now, it’s not as though we haven’t seen magic before in the MCU; Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has introduced (and promptly killed off) two separate Darkforce users (manipulators of extra-dimensional energy), and Agent Carter season 2 was all about the MCU’s first encounter with the Darkforce Dimension.  Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. Scarlet Witch, is (properly speaking) a magic user, though her powers have thus far been limited (for the most part) to mental manipulation and telekinesis.  However, all of these examples have been given scientific explanations (less so in the case of Scarlet Witch):  extra-dimensional energy and Mind Stone experimentation, respectively.

What Doctor Strange brings to the table is a form of magic we have not seen before, which will defy most scientific explanation.  I expect that characters will attempt to give it a scientific explanation (Strange is a doctor, after all!), but at some point they will just have to acknowledge that there are some things they will never fully comprehend.

Once Doctor Strange introduces magic in a big way, I expect that we will start to see a lot of magic users appear in various MCU offerings, a theory to which I alluded last week while talking about Tie-In possibilities between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Doctor Strange.  This week I will expand on that by talking about magical characters who could appear in as many upcoming announced MCU offerings as I can.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Finale Unanswered Questions

Last week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season finale brought most of the season’s plots to a satisfying conclusion.  However, the final few minutes also brought to light a number of new plots which look to become significant in a few months when S.H.I.E.L.D. returns with its fourth season.  We will have plenty of time to break all of these down over the summer, but for now I just want to lay out what I consider to be the unanswered questions from the finale.  What unanswered questions do we have after the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season finale?

Note that there will definitely be spoilers.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episodes 21, "Absolution," and 22, "Ascension," REVIEW (SPOILERS)

So it’s three days after the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season finale and I finally managed to watch it!  And all I can say (at least without spoilers) is:  “WOW!”  I was surprised by just how well-done that was.  It really didn’t feel like 2 episodes of a TV show; it felt a lot more like watching a movie (aside from the fact that I needed to fast-forward through the commercials).  The acting—on the whole—was very good.  The CGI and fight choreography was better than normal TV quality.  And it was a very fitting send-off for the eponymous “Fallen Agent.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episode 20, "Emancipation" REVIEW (SPOILERS)

Overall, the penultimate episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 (counting the 2-hour finale as a single episode) definitely did its due diligence in setting events into motion for the season finale.  The battle lines between the two sides are drawn.  Hive’s plan is now in perfect focus.  If Hive succeeds, it is clear that that would mean the end of the world—or at least the end of the human race’s dominance on this planet!

At the same time, “Emancipation” also succeeded in presenting the natural tie-in between Captain America: Civil War and this show.  It made perfect sense in the context of the show, and the position taken by Coulson and his team fits with both what we know of their characters and the events of the show.  It isn’t as game-changing as the Captain America: The Winter Soldier tie-in from 2 years ago, but it does set S.H.I.E.L.D. on a new path moving forward as they consider how best to address the government’s desire to register and document all enhanced individuals.

This episode does just about everything it needs to do, and it does it all quite well.

Warning:  There are spoilers for both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America: Civil War in this review.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. End of the Season Wish List

This week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., “The Team,” was one of the best episodes so far this season.  It gave us the Secret Warrior action we’ve been waiting for—though not nearly enough of it!  There was enormous intrigue around the possibility of Hive having taken over one of the Inhumans.  And there was a huge twist at the end centered on that specific intrigue.  I won’t mention it here to avoid spoilers, but I’m going to warn you off the bat:  if you haven’t seen the episode yet, don’t read the rest of this article; it’s pretty much based on spoilers from the episode!

There are five episodes (4 weeks) left of this season, and after this week’s episode, it is much clearer what we can expect to see in the final episodes.  What follows will be partly expectations and partly wishes for the remainder of the season.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episode 17, "The Team" REVIEW (SPOILERS)

Well, I do think this episode was just about everything I was hoping it would be:  We saw the Secret Warriors come together as a team for the first time, and they fought quite well, though they didn’t do all that much fighting as a team.  The team coming together and rescuing Zephyr One part of the episode was not quite as long as I was hoping or expecting—we’ve waited most of a season to see the Secret Warriors fighting the good fight, after all—but the rest of the episode was definitely worth it.

As an aside before I get to the review, ABC came so close to actually doing something smart with their “Your Voice, Your Vote” interludes this week, but it was still a near miss.  The first time they did it—to let us know that Trump won his home state (what a shocker)—it was before the “Previously on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” had even started.  Great job, guys!  But the second time they did it—letting us know that the carpet bagger beat out the local boy—Daisy was in the middle of a sentence.  Sorry, guys, but it’s another near miss.  Seriously, time it so that you’re cutting in during a commercial break next time!

Top Ten Episodes/Moments from MCU TV's First Hundred Episodes

Oh, how far we've come!

Sorry about the late update.  I wanted this ready to go up early in the day, but I kind of got sidetracked by Daredevil season 2!

Let’s do some quick math here:

56+18+13+13=100

You know what that means?  56 episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (22 episodes * 2 seasons + 12 of season 3) + 18 episodes of Agent Carter + 13 episodes of Daredevil+ 13 episodes of Jessica Jones = 100 episodes of MCU TV.  Wow!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episode 11, "Bouncing Back," REVIEW (SPOILERS)

About the only thing I can say to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. midseason premiere is “Awesome!”  This episode offers some good payoff for a few of the bigger moments in the midseason finale, particularly with regards to Ward and Coulson’s confrontation on Maveth.  We also get the much-hyped debut of Elena Rodriguez (whom Mack dubs “Yo-Yo”).  Oh, and there’s also that somewhat wild opening to talk about!  Let’s get right into it.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episode 10, "Maveth" REVIEW (SPOILERS!)

Last night was the midseason finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and it really didn’t disappoint.  There wasn’t nearly as much superpowered action as I was hoping to see, and the 2 biggest twists of the episode could be guessed pretty early on, but it more than made up for it with the other twists!  This was a majorly-twisty episode, and I think it is pretty safe to say that S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra are not going to be the same again after what happened in this episode.

Loose Ends and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Let’s talk about loose ends.  Every Marvel offering has had them; after all, you can’t build a Cinematic Universe without leaving some loose ends for the sequels to pull on!  Every comic book-based movie or TV series has left a few because there’s always the possibility of a sequel—though some of these loose ends are more obvious and hopeless than others (*cough*Sinestro*cough*).  Every TV series leaves at least a few loose ends, unless it is given the opportunity for a final season—and even then there may be a few plot threads left open-ended to allow for fan speculation.

However, when it comes to loose ends—or cliffhanger endings—no one seems to do them quite as well as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  After all, this is the series which concluded its second season with a main cast member getting sucked into a giant stone Monolith and still announced her as a returning main cast member!  Last year’s midseason finale ended with the death of a major character and the shocking revelation that a main cast member was no less than an important comic book character as well as the audience’s “in” to a world of superhumans which we did not expect to see explored before 2018 at the earliest (and more likely 2019, when their movie is scheduled to come out).  Whoa!

And next week is the midseason finale for season three.  After the episode airs we can spend months discussing all the loose ends left for the second half of the season to explore.  This week, however, I want to run through all of the loose ends left at the end of “Closure” (3x09), which really didn’t give closure to anything.

Obviously, there will be SPOILERS!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episode 9, "Closure" REVIEW (SPOILERS!)

You know, I’m kind of tempted not to publish a review of “Closure” (3x09), because I only review an episode after I’ve seen the whole thing, and clearly this episode still isn’t over!  I think we can safely say that this episode is one of—if not the—biggest cliffhanger of the entire series.  In fact, I kind of think that “Closure” and “Maveth” (3x10) could just as easily be the 2 halves of a TV movie as 2 separate TV episodes.  But this is just a review of the first half, which contains some wild twists en route to that cliffhanger ending.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3, Episode 8, "Many Heads, One Tale" REVIEW (SPOILERS)

So for the first 2/3 or so of this episode, I was really enjoying myself.  There was a lot of intrigue, particularly with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s relationship with their frenemies at the A.T.C.U.  Several of the characters got some nice moments.  Fitz-Simmons received some much-needed plot development.  Overall, it was a really interesting and intriguing episode.  And then the ending happened.  And my mind kind of did this:
