Captain America: Civil War Follow-Up: The Secret Avengers

After watching Captain America: Civil War, we now have a very good idea exactly where this thing is going to be going over the next few years as the MCU ramps up for the Infinity War in 2018 and 2019.  Each hero who appeared in Civil War received a satisfying arc, and at the end of the movie each of them had a definite trajectory of where their next appearances will come from.  So let’s talk about where these heroes will be going from here!

Obviously, there are spoilers ahead!

I’m going to break this down into three articles based on the teams that we see established by the end of the movie, with a couple extras thrown in for good measure.  First we will deal with the members of the “Secret Avengers” (more on the name in a bit).  Next week I will talk about the members of the “Mighty Avengers” (I’ll explain that name next week), followed by an article dealing with the special matter of the shield.  I will discuss the couple characters that don’t fit into either category the following week.  Finally this will conclude (maybe) the week after with an article about Zemo.

First up is Cap’s team of “Secret Avengers.”

The Secret Avengers

Before going any further, why am I calling them the “Secret Avengers”?  In the comic book “Civil War” arc, two teams of heroes emerge from the conflict:  the pro-Registration “Mighty Avengers” and the anti-Registration “New Avengers.”  The two teams come into conflict repeatedly as the Mighty Avengers attempt to bring the New Avengers in for violating the law.

However, we already kind of used the name “New Avengers” to refer to the team which assembled at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron and started off Civil War, so instead I’m going to use the “Secret Avengers,” a team which Captain America brought together following the “Dark Reign” storyline to operate in secret independently from the main Avengers team.  It’s not a perfect correlation, but it will do for now.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about the team.

The Secret Avengers team will likely be operating as unsanctioned heroes doing things that the Mighty Avengers will not do.  Based on the mid-credits tag in Wakanda it is possible that Black Panther will unofficially support them and perhaps provide Wakandan resources for them, but I doubt that he will officially join the team.  The Secret Avengers are essentially Cap’s team from the movie:  Steve Rogers, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Ant-Man, and Hawkeye.  I won’t talk in detail about all of them, but there are a couple to highlight.

Steve Rogers

At the end of Civil War, Steve voluntarily surrendered his shield to Tony Stark (more on that next week).  As such, he will no longer be operating as “Captain America.”  Instead, I predict that he will take on a different codename and wear an entirely different suit, at least until Avengers: Infinity War.  If I had to guess, I think Steve will start calling himself “The Captain,” following a storyline from the 1980s in which Steve refuses to work as a government-sanctioned agent, resigns his position, and takes the name, “The Captain.”  He may begin wearing a black costume reminiscent of the “Nomad” and “Captain” suits from the comics, but that’s just wild speculation.  I do think that he will get a new shield from Black Panther, and I would guess a triangular one to distinguish it from his round Captain America shield.

Over the next several years I suspect that Steve will continue leading his team and make at most a couple appearances in movies like Black Panther and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Ant-Man

Ant-Man is the only member of the Secret Avengers with a solo movie scheduled for the next few years.  As such, I could see one or two of the Secret Avengers making a small cameo there (just enough to remind everyone that they are a team).  In the meantime, Ant-Man will continue fighting alongside the Secret Avengers while working with Hank and Hope Pym to improve his suit and find Janet.

When Ant-Man and the Wasp comes out, we will finally get to see Hope suit up as the Wasp and the two of them team up to find Janet and perhaps also stop a Hydra plot involving the Black Ant (Hydra using the Pym Particles they stole).

Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and Hawkeye

When Steve broke his team out of the Raft, he rescued everyone, so the whole team will be together between Civil War and Infinity War.  Where they will appear between those two movies is somewhat unclear, but we can make some guesses.  For example, one of the other Secret Avengers could appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp, perhaps in a mission against Hydra.

My guess is that Scarlet Witch will not appear in any movies between now and Infinity War—she’s a somewhat over-powered character along the lines of the Hulk or Vision who may overshadow the other heroes in whatever other movie she is in.  However, depending on how Infinity War turns out, I’d love to see a Vision and the Scarlet Witch movie in Phase 4!

If Steve/“The Captain” appears in any movies between now and Infinity War, I would not be surprised to also see Falcon.  Alternatively, Falcon or Hawkeye could fit into Ant-Man and the Wasp quite well.

The upshot with these three heroes is that I expect them to continue as a team with the Secret Avengers, and they will all fight together as a team in one of the Infinity War movies.

Conclusion

This is where I see the characters on Cap’s Secret Avengers going in Phase 3.  There isn’t all that much to say about several of them; the most exciting area for speculation revolves around Captain America’s shield and where Steve Rogers will go without it.  I am very curious to see how this team will be incorporated into the rest of Phase 3; hopefully we will get to see more of them in some of the movies.

Where do you think Steve and the rest will be going moving forward?  What codename do you think Steve should use?  Let me know in the comments!

If you’re looking for my review of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season finale, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow.  Tuesday night was graduation at our school, and both last night and tonight were pretty busy also.  Hopefully I will get to it tomorrow.
