Weekly MCU Review for April 29

Another week, and more MCU news!  Not a ton of MCU-related news this week, but only because I didn’t include the mountains of press for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which hits theaters next weekend.  Put some ketchup on your eggs, and catch-up on your Marvel news!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Review DELAYED

So I was hoping that I could talk about last night's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode today, but unfortunately, DirecTV had other plans.  For some reason, all of the local channels were unavailable last night (not just our local ABC affiliate).  So instead of watching last night's episode, we watched Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which was fun, but isn't Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (and we have it on DVD so we can watch it any time).

Considering that this is the middle of Holy Week, I don't know when I will have time to hunt for last night's episode online, so it may be a while before I review it.  Please call the following number with any complaints:  800-531-5000.

Weekly Non-MCU Review for New Year's Eve

Another week, and more non-MCU news!  This is another week without anything strictly MCU-related, but there’s a little bit from Carrie Fisher’s passing.

Sadly, Carrie Fisher passed away this week following her heart attack last week.

Somewhat fortunately for the franchise, Carrie Fisher had finished her Episode VIII filming already.

Random Thoughts on Pokémon GO

I don’t normally write about Pokémon GO—this may be the only article I ever write on the subject!—but I’ve been playing the game for around 6 weeks now, and I’ve got some thoughts on it.  This isn’t terribly well structured; it’s more like my random jumbled thoughts forced into something of an order.

There are a lot of things I really like about this game:  it’s fun to capture new Pokémon, fighting and taking down gyms is rather cathartic, it gives a reason to explore the local area, and it’s a great excuse to go out and walk a lot.  However, there are also a number of aspects where the game isn’t as good as it could be.  Hopefully the updates which are supposed to be on their way in the near future will help with this, but there are a few things that have not been mentioned which I really think need to be discussed.

Star Wars Rebels: Kanan's Story

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm and announced that it would be producing a new series of Star Wars sequels and spinoffs, I had some really mixed emotions. On the one hand, I was really excited about seeing more of my favorite sci-fi universe. On the other hand, I was also a little nervous about what they were planning to do with it; after all, the prequels weren’t nearly the same quality as the original trilogy. And on top of that, Disney decided to get rid of the entire extended universe!

Now, I wasn’t quite as upset about that as some Star Wars fans I know, who had dedicated years to collecting and reading all of the EU books. In my opinion, it made sense for Disney to scrap the entire EU so that they could have a clean slate to create their own Star Wars universe instead of having to fit their new movies into a universe which has already been created and spans millennia of Star Wars history. Looking at this in comic book terms, it’s little different from Marvel Studios making changes to the characters and events of the comics when adapting them to the movies.

With that being said, however, I was still disappointed because it meant that so many characters I really like are unlikely to appear in the Star Wars universe any more.

In order for me to really get behind the new Star Wars universe, Disney needed to provide me with new characters in whose stories I can become invested. And even now, a month before Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters, I can definitely say that they have done so already. In fact, it started last year already, with the first season of Star Wars Rebels. For a series directed primarily at children, Star Wars Rebels is a surprisingly mature series.

Agent Carter and Feminism

This came to me last week while I was writing my review of the Agent Carter season 1 finale, but I decided it was too much of a tangent to include in the review.  Instead, I’m publishing it this week as a follow up to Agent Carter season 1.

Do you remember last year when the Internet was exploding over the question of Agent Carter and feminism?  Some called it a “triumph” for feminism; some called it a “failure” for feminism.  Respectfully, I disagree with both sides.

What was Steve and Peggy's Relationship?

Image Found on Pinterest

When I first read Hayley Atwell’s comment to the effect that she thinks Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter did have sex back during the war, I wasn’t entirely sure what to think.  Okay, my immediate knee-jerk reaction was to think, “of course they didn’t:  He’s Captain America!”

After mulling over the question for a while, however, I came to the conclusion that it isn’t quite so cut-and-dry.  So I’m going to quickly go through the arguments in favor of and against the proposition that Cap and Carter were sleeping together.  Why?  I’m not entirely sure.  But let’s do it anyways.

Adds on Mostly MCU Reviews

You are going to start noticing ads on my blog in the next few days.  I decided to sign up for ads as a way to make a little money off of my hobby--money which will most likely go right back into my hobby!  I don't want the ads to be too obtrusive or get in the way of the blog's smooth operation, so if you have trouble with any of them, post a comment letting me know and I will correct it.  If you notice that pages are loading extra slowly for whatever reason, let me know that also and I will see what I can do for fix it.

I hope you continue to enjoy reading my articles on here; I certainly enjoy writing them!

An Apology and a Make-Up Review

Note:  So I'm not going to get my "One Door Closes" review done tonight since this is the busiest week of the year for my profession.  I'm working on it, and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get it done tomorrow morning, so I'll try to get it published before noon tomorrow (no guarantees).  Given that Sunday is Easter, I'm not going to be able to write any more articles this weekend, so all I'm doing for this weekend is the review.  Next week I will get back to my regular schedule (though I will probably be flip-flopping the Daredevil and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. articles).

In the meantime, here is a review that I wrote earlier this week.  This has nothing to do with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the MCU, or even comics; this is a review of the Killing Jesus event that was on National Geographic Channel this past Sunday night.  If you watched it and had questions about it, feel free to ask them in the comments.
