San Diego Comic-Con 2016 RESULTS

So another San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone.  If you recall, last week I posted my expectations for the MCU presentations at Comic-Con.  Let’s see how I did!  In some ways I was spot-on, but there were a few places I missed.

Last year Marvel Studios didn’t even go to Comic-Con, so there really wasn’t a ton of stuff to report.  This year, I think they were trying to make up for lost time, because they gave us a lot of new stuff to talk about!

Wild and Crazy Captain Marvel Idea

This is just a quick idea I came up with a while back.  You may remember that I’ve talked in the past about the concept of the female hero team (A-Force and the Lady Liberators both come to mind).  I’ve also said that this only really works in the MCU as it is set up (a lot of heroes without a ton of connections to each other beyond team boundaries) when you come up with a reason for the guys to stay home and let the girls handle it themselves.  Finally, when talking about this, I’ve pointed out that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already introduced the perfect character to necessitate an all-girls team-up.

Well, let’s take that a bit further and talk about how this could work into the MCU using one of the movies that is already on the release schedule.  Specifically, what if Captain Marvel turns out to be an all-ladies team-up movie?

Captain America: Civil War Follow-Up: Zemo

When I was originally putting together this series of articles, I intended to include Zemo in the previous article with “The Rest.”  However, as I considered further, I realized that there is so much more to talk about with regard to Zemo, particularly because I think he will come back to become a major player several years down the line in Phase 4.

After watching Captain America: Civil War, we now have a very good idea exactly where this thing is going to be going over the next few years as the MCU ramps up for the Infinity War in 2018 and 2019.  Each hero who appeared in Civil War received a satisfying arc, and at the end of the movie each of them had a definite trajectory of where their next appearances will come from.  However, the presumptive villain, Helmut Zemo, did not get to do quite as much in this movie as the heroes did—even if he did exactly as much as he needed to do!

Over the last four weeks, I talked about the members of the “Secret Avengers” and “Mighty Avengers,” as well as Captain America’s abandoned shield and the other heroes who do not fit into the other categories and a replacement Captain America.  This time around, I will talk about Zemo and how I think he fits into Marvel’s larger plans moving forward.

This is my last planned article for Captain America: Civil War; next week we’ll get into Daredevil season 2 and how it sets up future Netflix series.

Rumor Has It... Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok

This week news broke that Tessa Thompson has been cast for a “key role” in Thor: Ragnarok, which is rumored to be none other than Valkyrie.  Valkyrie has been rumored to appear in Thor: Ragnarok for a while, and we’ve even seen some concept art of what she could look like:

This afternoon I want to take some time to discuss who Valkyrie is and how she could fit into this movie.

Marvel's Civil War: The Movie Tie-In Possibilities

Two weeks ago, I made the case that Captain America: Civil War needs to have far-reaching implications for the MCU in Phase 3—it can’t be wrapped up in a bow after a single movie.  There needs to be some major tie-in between Captain America: Civil War and the rest of Marvel’s offerings over the next several years.  Last week I offered a template of what “major tie-in” looked like with the previous Captain America movie, when The Winter Soldier shook things up for the entire Marvel Universe—especially by completely redefining Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

For the next two week I will be answering the question:  What would a good Captain America: Civil War tie-in look like?

To answer this question I will be looking at everything Marvel which we know is coming out in the next few years.  This includes the Phase 3 movies, the network TV shows (specifically Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Most Wanted, and Damage Control), and the Netflix shows.  That’s a lot of media to cover, so I’m going to break it up into 2 articles.  Next week I’ll talk about TV and Netflix, but this week I will start with the movies.

The Spider-Man costume for Captain America: Civil War will reportedly require a lot of special effects.

Sony executives this week screened Captain America: Civil War to offer notes and approval of the depiction of Spider-Man.  I just hope their notes don’t make the movie worse (*cough*The Amazing Spider-Man 2*cough*).

Variety is reporting that Marvel is after Cate Blanchett for a role in Thor: Ragnarok.  Galadriel, maybe?

The writing team for Ant-Man and the Wasp has been officially finalized:  Paul Rudd, Adam McKay, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari.

Evidently, though Ant-Man and the Wasp will borrow from the tone of Ant-Man, it will “have an entirely different template.”

According to Anthony Russo, working the Defenders into Avengers: Infinity War would be “complicated.”  In other news, water is wet!  Of course this kind of thing would be complicated; Marvel has been making a living on “complicated” ever since RDJ showed up in the mid-credits scene of someone else’s movie to promote a combined sequel!  He notes that there needs to be a compelling reason, and I think plot-wise they could easily make this kind of thing work:  Thanos wants to destroy the world, and last I heard that includes Hell’s Kitchen!  Having said all that, however, I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to have the Defenders and S.H.I.E.L.D. show up in Avengers: Infinity War, but it is definitely necessary for them to be involved in the Infinity War (which is going to span a full year, with 2 direct movies, 2 movies between, and a full season’s worth of TV).

Jessica Jones has only been out a couple weeks, and we’re already getting news about the next series on the release slate:  Daredevil season 2.  They showed some footage at a Comic-Con in Brazil, and from the description it sounds pretty awesome:  Daredevil vs. The Punisher!

Well, huh.  Frank Miller is apparently not a Daredevil fan.  Too bad, considering that the Netflix series actually did his character justice—and will probably do the same with his other character, Elektra, in season 2!

And just like that, we now know more about Iron Fist than we’ve known about it since Marvel announced the series:  Scott Buck is going to be the showrunner and we now have our first official synopsis:

Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.

The synopsis sounds great:  they’re not straying away from the mystical elements as some of the rumors suggested, and they are definitely going to make him unique by comparison with Daredevil.  What do you think?

News from Around Geekdom

Anything not related to the MCU that I find interesting

What do you think of this first X-Men: Apocalypse trailer?

Tying in with the trailer release, Marvel announced its new “X-Men: Apocalypse Wars” comic book.  This is the first time in quite a while that Marvel has actually tried to promote a Fox movie property in their comics!

I’m kind of confused by this article.  You see, I could’ve sworn that they announced the Flash for Batman vs. Superman a while back.  Maybe that was a semi-confirmed rumor and this is confirmation.

Do you want to see Will Smith’s Deadshot in the Batman solo film?

So, do you agree with Stephen Amell that Green Arrow could beat Batman?  I’m not going to dismiss the possibility out of hand like many, but I think it only happens under very specific circumstances.  Namely, it can only happen if Arrow is sniping him from a distance and Batman doesn’t know he’s being targeted (or that Arrow is even there).

Another in a long line of DC Comics characters to appear in the DCTVU:  [SPOILER].

Huh.  So The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow are starting/returning January 19, 20, and 21, respectively.  For some reason I thought Legends of Tomorrow was supposed to be a midseason-break-series, and that Arrow and The Flash would return after it finished.

Do you want a USB car charger shaped like the Death Star with Grand Moff Tarkin’s voice?

So apparently December 18 is going to see a tear form in the space-time continuum:  the trailer for Star Trek Beyond is going to run before Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  I feel like those two can’t actually share a screen together…  Also included with Episode 7 are Captain America: Civil War, Batman v. Superman, and Deadpool.

What do you think of the TMNT 2 trailer?

All-New, All-Different Marvel: The Rest

Marvel announced last year that they would be completely rebooting their universe following the Secret Wars/Battleworld event. As part of this reboot they are going to be focusing on some new and altered characters, particularly those whose TV and movie rights are owned by Marvel Studios. This is leading Marvel to focus its efforts on promoting the Inhumans while downplaying the mutants, as well as to the splitting up of the Fantastic Four, with Human Torch joining the Inhumans and the Thing joining the Guardians of the Galaxy. So because the All-New, All-Different Marvel is going all-in on Marvel Studios properties, I started to wonder if some of the other characters in the A-N, A-D Marvel might be getting a push for a future movie or TV appearance. As such, this series will look at all the characters in the All-New, All-Different Marvel lineup whose live-action rights are owned by either Marvel Studios or Sony and who have not appeared in a movie yet.

Some of these are characters I’ve written about in the past, so I will include links to those articles and only provide relatively brief summaries.

If there are any additional characters that you would like to see me cover in this series, let me know in the comments.

This is the last article I expect to write in this miniseries. In this one I’ll cover all the remaining characters owned by Marvel or Sony and which are getting their own titles in the All-New, All-Different Marvel lineup. If there’s one you expected to see but haven’t seen, check either of the team articles, linked at the bottom of the page. If you think I missed someone, let me know in the comments!
